Volunteering Connects Us – Gabriella’s story

Volunteering with Archway has been a “rich and valuable” experience for Archway volunteer and Young Trustee Gabriella, she tells us about her experience:

Having enjoyed past experiences volunteering with The Oxford Hub (Oxford University) on various projects, I was looking to broaden my experiences working closely with local charities, particularly one concentrating on supporting people with social or health issues. The focus Archway puts on supporting those hurt by loneliness therefore seemed a great choice.

Before volunteering with Archway I was not fully aware of what a huge issue loneliness is for people of all ages. I’ve found it very rewarding to help lesson loneliness within in the community, even if only by a very small amount. Volunteering with Archway has introduced me to a whole host of new people in Oxford whom without it I would never have met. It’s been nice to be part of a completely different side to the community outside the University bubble. I love being a visiting trustee on the board as everyone has been so welcoming and have made me feel that my contributions to the board are both appreciated and encouraged.

The thing that I most value about volunteering with Archway is immediately having the opportunity to form strong friends both with staff, other volunteers and most importantly with Archway’s ‘Friends’ (service users). I have benefited from gaining understanding of the struggles people can go through in their day-to-day lives which before I maybe wouldn’t have considered. Hopefully some of those people benefited from having me there to chat to!

3 reasons why Gabriella would recommend volunteering at Archway to a friend:

1. It’s a great opportunity to develop your interpersonal skills.

2. Some of the bonds you form within the Archway community and the effect they have on you personally you will find sticking with you for a very long time.

3. Volunteering your time to help others will never feel wasted but will be rich in valued experiences.

Thank you Gabriella
