“Zigzagging” along the canal – a fine day out

Archway runs weekly social groups, where people can meet others and have a chat in a safe supportive space, but activity is not confined to the indoors, this summer our Archway groups took to the canal for a fine day out on a barge. Joy, Archway in Abingdon’s coordinator tells us all about it:

The Rotary Club in Abingdon invited Archway to bring a small group for a barge trip on the Kennet and Avon canal. For some on the trip, it was their first experience of canals and locks. We travelled along a beautiful stretch from Great Bedwyn. The lovely crew headed by Skipper John May encouraged everybody to try their hand at steering and operating the locks. We did a few interesting zigzags whilst getting the hang of the steering but managed to avoid other boats and wildlife! We had a lovely picnic en route including some yummy homemade cake.

It was a most enjoyable day with good weather and the rain held off till our journey home. The group were most enthusiastic about their day out and we are very grateful to the Rotary Club for this great opportunity.

Thank you to the rotary club for making this happen!
